Stage I TNM T1-2, N0, M0 The tumor can be removed surgically and has not spread to involve the lymph nodes . Standard Treatment If possible, the lobe of the involved lung with the tumor in place is removed along with the nearby lymph nodes. Sometimes the entire lung on one side needs to be removed to insure that all of the tumor is resected. In patients with a small (T1) tumor, or in patients with impaired lung function, only a wedge resection , which removes the tumor with a small amount of surrounding tissue , is done. In those patients with severe lung or heart disease who cannot tolerate surgery, radiation therapy is sometimes used. Five-Year Survival 30 to 80 percent
